The Historic Clock Marked Our Wedding Day

MAY 29, 1983, NEW YORK CITY

It all started on a rainy spring day at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, yet the historic World’s Fair Clock, a landmark in the lobby of the iconic Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, marked our wedding day. The reception was celebrated in the Starlight Roof.
The choreographed reception inside the flower-filled ballroom, decorated with hanging chandelier bouquets, was breathtaking. The room was enveloped with the fragrance of a thousand blooms.

The attire was black tie with the gentlemen in coattails and ladies in couture gowns. Oysters Rockefeller, clams casino, lobster, and filet mignon were menu staples. Pouilly-Fuissé, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an open bar, and vintage Dom Pérignon flowed throughout the evening. Music by the popular Latin band El Gran Combo and special guest Tomas de San Julian, who is famous for his song “Mi Niña Bonita,” serenaded the bride and the proud father. What a start to a new life!

And no, it has not been dull. A perfect beginning for the young couple. We have been married for 38 years. Our wedding day memories grow more precious by the passage of time. And just like the World’s Fair Clock in the lobby stands to mark time at the Waldorf-Astoria, so do we share that special marking of time. Just like that first day. A most special day for us.
